SOUND EQUIPMENT

The Lavalier Microphone
Lavalier or "Lav" mics (also called lapel mics) in my opinion are an absolute must for the one-man-band film maker or vlogger. The traditional way of getting good sound is to have a techie holding a boom with a mic on the end over the heads of the talent - which is great if you have a crew. If it's just you however, then this is just not an option. If it's just you and your camera, there is no better way to get clean strong audio than to use a Lavalier mic.

Advantages of a Lav Mic
Picture
The advantage of a lav mic lies in it's tiny size which  means you can mount it almost anywhere. They are also designed to be "omnidirectional", which means that they will record sound even if the mic is not pointing at the source.

This means that if you do not want the mic to be visible (if you were recording a drama scene for example), you can hide the mic under a collar, inside clothing or even in someone's hair - and it will still pick up the speech.

As the mic stays with the performer wherever they go, the lav mic connected to a portable recorder like the Zoom H1 is virtually as good as a radio mic for picking up consistantly clear dialogue whether the actor/performer is right in front of the camera or a quarter of a mile away!

Lav mics. are so useful that they are now even being produced for use with smart phones so make sure that when you buy one, it's the right type. The mic inputs on cameras and Smart phones are wired differently and a mic designed one won't work on the other - although adaptors are available.

If like me you are a one-man-band or Vlogger, then the combination of a Lav mic and recorder like the Zoom H1 is a pretty much unbeatable combination, and should be all the sound equipent you are likely to need.
